Big Visual Data as a New Form of Knowledge – Potentials, Challenges, and Transformations

Riesige Mengen visueller Daten prägen zunehmend unser Wissen und beeinflussen, wie wir die Welt wahrnehmen – ob in Sozialen Medien, bei der Videoüberwachung urbaner Räume, im Rahmen KI-gestützter medizinischer Diagnostik oder bei der optischen Fernerkundung unseres Planeten aus dem All. Dieses Sonderheft widmet sich jener gegenwärtigen Konjunktur und der wachsenden Bedeutung sehr grosser digitaler visueller Datenmengen, die in verschiedenen Forschungsdisziplinen begrifflich unter Big Visual Data firmieren. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage, welche Rolle Big Visual Data bei der Herstellung und Tradierung, Stabilisierung und Veränderung von gesellschaftlichem Wissen und sozialer Wirklichkeit spielen, und damit die Erkundung, inwiefern Big Visual Data eine neue Macht der Bilder hervorbringen, worin diese besteht und wie sie sich entfaltet.
Ausgehend von dieser Fragestellung setzt das Sonderheft zwei Analyseschwerpunkte: Einerseits stehen die Technologien, Methoden und infrastrukturellen Bedingungen im Fokus, durch die Big Visual Data erzeugt, gespeichert, integriert, verarbeitet, analysiert und visualisiert werden. Andererseits gilt das Interesse den konkreten sozialen Praktiken der Erzeugung, Interpretation und Nutzung von Big Visual Data in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Kontexten.
Die insgesamt sechs Beiträge greifen diese Schwerpunkte aus unterschiedlichen, zum Teil interdisziplinären Perspektiven auf und untersuchen kritisch die Potenziale und Herausforderungen von Big Visual Data sowie die Transformationen, die durch Big Visual Data hervorgerufen und mitgeprägt werden – sei es in der alltäglichen beruflichen Praxis, sei es in investigativen zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen, sei es in virtuellen Archiven von Kunstinstitutionen oder sei es in der Wissenschaft.
D’énormes volumes de données visuelles façonnent de plus en plus notre savoir et influencent notre perception du monde, qu’il s’agisse de données issues des médias sociaux, de la vidéosurveillance urbaine, des diagnostics médicaux assistés par l’IA ou de l’observation de la Terre depuis l’espace. Ce numéro hors-série est consacré à cette évolution et à l’importance croissante de très grands volumes de données visuelles numériques, appelés mégadonnées visuelles dans les différentes disciplines de recherche. La question centrale est de savoir quel rôle jouent les mégadonnées visuelles dans la génération, la transmission, la pérennisation et l’évolution d’un savoir sociétal et d’une réalité sociale, et donc d’explorer dans quelle mesure les mégadonnées visuelles génèrent un nouveau pouvoir des images, en quoi celui-ci consiste et comment il se déploie.
Partant de cette question, ce numéro hors-série se concentre sur deux axes d’analyse : d’une part, il se penche sur les technologies, les méthodes et les infrastructures qui permettent de produire, de stocker, de traiter, d’intégrer, d’analyser et de visualiser des mégadonnées visuelles. D’autre part, il porte son attention sur les pratiques sociales concrètes de production, d’interprétation et d’utilisation des mégadonnées visuelles dans différents contextes sociétaux.
Les six contributions abordent ces aspects sous différents angles, quelques fois interdisciplinaires, et examinent de manière critique le potentiel des mégadonnées visuelles et les défis devant lesquels elles nous placent. Elles analysent également les transformations déclenchées par les mégadonnées visuelles ou influencées par celles-ci, que ce soit dans la pratique professionnelle quotidienne, au sein des organisations de la société civile engagées dans l’investigation, dans des archives virtuelles d’institutions culturelles, ou encore dans le domaine scientifique.
Vast amounts of visual data are increasingly shaping our knowledge and influencing how we perceive the world – whether on social media, through video surveillance of urban spaces, in the context of AI-assisted medical diagnostics, or through optical remote sensing of our planet from space. This special issue is dedicated to examining the growing importance of this phenomenon, known across a variety of research disciplines as Big Visual Data. At the center stands the question of what role Big Visual Data plays in the production and transmission, the stabilization and transformation of social knowledge and social reality – and with it, the exploration of the extent to which Big Visual Data enables images to wield a new kind of power, what this power consists of, and how it unfolds.
Based on this question, the special issue features two principal areas of analytical interest. On the one hand, the focus is on the technologies, methods, and infrastructural conditions through which Big Visual Data is generated, stored, integrated, processed, analyzed, and visualized. On the other, the volume investigates the concrete social practices of generating, interpreting, and using Big Visual Data in various social contexts.
The six essays address these two aspects from different, in part interdisciplinary, perspectives and critically examine both the potential and the challenges of Big Visual Data, as well as the transformations that they drive – be it in everyday professional practice, investigative civic organizations, virtual archives of art institutions, or science.
